This feature was always available but recently, Snapchat started showing a worldwide view by default highlighting popular attractions and "world updates".
There you can see places like Central Park or Eiffel Tower on a world map. World updates can be also browsed from the Friends tab on Snapmap and there you will see a bunch of stories that happened during the day.
Both features are not new but previously you would rather see a local map by default.
