This update, previously in a limited test phase, offers users the capability to enable ChatGPT to recall information and context from past interactions, thereby personalizing future conversations. Users, both free and Plus subscribers, across several countries including the US, Canada, and Australia, now report access to this feature. However, it remains unavailable in the European Union, though access can be simulated via a US VPN.
To experience the memory feature, users must navigate to their ChatGPT settings where the option should now exist for an increasing number. This rollout is occurring gradually, with more users gaining access over time. The feature leverages the internal “bio” tool in ChatGPT’s system prompt, enabling the AI to store, view, edit, and delete remembered details about users to customize interactions accordingly.
User feedback reflects a mixed initial response, with some finding the feature’s ability to surface old conversation details unexpectedly jarring. Despite this, the adaptation period seemingly leads to a normalization of experiences as users tailor their AI memory. This development marks a significant expansion in ChatGPT’s functionality, as it now can sustain continuity in interactions by remembering past details, albeit the rollout is not yet comprehensive.
