WhatsApp is releasing bigger media previews to everyone on Android

This is a minor feature but it can change your user experience with WhatsApp if you are sharing lots of vertical pictures. Previously, media previews were a little bit smaller. The new preview format will simply take more space from your screen so you will see less text at the end.

This makes WhatsApp closer to other messengers like Telegram, which simply display full-size previews without any cropping. You can see which part of the image was cropped on the screenshot above 👆

The feature supposed to be enabled on the server-side but it is also better to update to the latest beta to ensure that your app does support it. It is still under rollout so it may take several days until it will become truly available to all Android users.

How to test:

  • Open any WhatsApp conversation.
  • Share any screenshot to the chat to see a bigger preview.

Tester Context:

  • 📲 WhatsApp is a popular messenger app by Facebook.
  • 📲 WhatsApp is also available in Beta and you can opt-in as a tester via Google Play.
