Gemini takes over Bard: Google's AI with a dedicated Android app

In a refreshing pivot from the familiar BART, Google has unveiled its new AI endeavour, Gemini, and with it, a premium tier dubbed "Gemini Advanced." For those intrigued by the robust features this new model promises, there's more good news: a bundled package with Google One Advanced and an introductory no-charge period to get a taste of its capabilities. Mind you, the transition isn't purely nominal. The Gemini UI now brandishes an intuitive sidebar, granting a more organized hub for tools and resources – a clear pivot from the upper right corner that users have become accustomed to.

Bard is now Gemini

To access and toggle between Gemini and Gemini Advanced, users can follow these simple steps:

  1. Sign up or log into your Google account and head over to the Gemini webpage.
  2. In the top left corner of the interface, locate and click on the dropdown menu.
  3. Select between the standard Gemini or the Gemini Advanced plan.
  4. Enjoy the feature set that best suits your needs, with easy access to additional tools and updates through the new sidebar menu.

It's worth noting for the early adopters among us that despite the loss of image generation functions witnessed in its predecessor, Bard, Gemini Advanced stakes its claim with a promise of enhancing the productivity of professionals and tech enthusiasts alike.

Gemini refuses to draw an image

As for the apps, there's an exciting development for Android users in the US, who can now deploy Gemini directly from a dedicated app. Be mindful, though – if you dabble in VPNs, the app has a keen eye for such tools, rendering access contingent on a Google Play account set to the US without recent country switches. An iOS version of Gemini is not standalone; rather, integration has been meticulously woven into the Google app itself, ensuring a cohesive user experience across various devices.
