Connecting the "dots" between ChatGPT and World Wallet

A Coming soon Wallet row showed up in ChatGPT the same day World App rebranded to World Money. OpenAI has not linked the two. We are not sure the timing is an accident.

It looks like ChatGPT users will soon get a dedicated wallet, and if you connect the dots (pun intended), the timing is hard to treat as a coincidence. It comes just a couple of weeks after World App, the identity and crypto app co-founded by Sam Altman, finished rebranding as World Money.

A few days ago, a screenshot from the ChatGPT app appeared, showing a new Wallet option in settings, marked as "Coming soon." Tapping on the option brings up a sheet that says “A little wallet. A world of possibilities. Your Wallet is on its way.”

While OpenAI hasn't commented publicly on the upcoming wallet, we presume that it's a match made in heaven for Dots. We reported on OpenAI’s always-on agents, each with a cloud computer and browser, able to connect to thousands of apps and keep working after you close the chat. They can use saved passwords if you let them. The launch post mentions fixes, documents, research, Slack, and Teams, but does not explain how a Dot pays for anything.

Meta's Muse agent, by contrast, can browse, fill out forms, and complete a purchase, then stop for approval before money moves. But the company is already running into roadblocks with this setup.

Amazon has already stopped Muse from buying on Amazon.com, telling shoppers that using an unauthorized agent breaks site rules. The company also plans to block agents from Google and OpenAI. So we're curious to see how other platforms handle this and if a dedicated wallet will make the purchase process easier.

OpenAI, for its part, has also tried in-chat buying before. Instant Checkout launched last September with Stripe, starting with Etsy sellers and then with partners who could build a cart inside the chat. Roughly half a year later, though, the company said the first version was not flexible enough and moved payments back to merchant sites and ChatGPT apps. That's where a wallet you set up once could let an agent pay at stores that never joined that system.

Adding to that, Glen Coates, OpenAI’s head of app platform, told The Verge this week that the company is being careful about plugins, sign-in, and “how we let your agents pay for things.” So it's clear OpenAI wants its AI agents to be able to pay for things online. But could this upcoming wallet be tied to World Money?

Tools for Humanity, which Altman co-founded with Alex Blania, had already announced the app on September 17. It is a self-custody wallet for stablecoins, with Stripe funding in the US and a rewards bump if you have verified with World ID. Identity stays in a separate app. A Visa card tied to that wallet has been promised since April 2025 and is still mostly a promise. In fact, we saw it replaced with a new Virtual Account instead.

Of course, nothing public suggests that the ChatGPT Wallet and World Money share a balance. The August code refers to cards, not crypto, and the two companies are separate. Having a shared co-founder and the same launch date does not mean there is a payments deal. But again, the timing is what supports the theory. World App stayed the same for a whole year, but only rebranded when OpenAI planned to launch a dedicated wallet. Huh!?

We think the overlap is too neat to file as nothing. Dots need a way to shop if they are going to sit next to Muse, and a "Coming soon" wallet is the missing piece. World Money becoming an actual wallet around the same time is either an incredible coincidence or a sign that Sam Altman might not be willing to let his side project go to waste. Either way, we'll keep an eye out for more details on the wallet and World Money.
