Recent updates from Perplexity introduced a few minor features and hinted at some exciting potential changes.
One of the most anticipated updates is the potential extension of the list of models available to pro subscribers. Among the additions is O1, the latest reasoning model by OpenAI, which is already publicly available. Previously, this model was used selectively for complex queries, with Perplexity deciding when to apply its reasoning capabilities. Its usage was also quite limited. However, in the future, pro users may gain the ability to explicitly force Perplexity to use O1 with reasoning for their queries, which would be an excellent and much-needed enhancement.
In addition, Perplexity has introduced a label for an “upcoming model.” According to its description, this model is still in testing, and internal references suggest it could be Gemini. If this is the case, Perplexity is likely planning to add one of the Gemini models to its offerings, which would be a significant upgrade for pro users.
It’s unclear which specific Gemini model might be included—it could be one of the experimental models currently available on AI Studio or potentially something entirely new, like Gemini 2.0 Pro, which hasn’t been publicly released yet. Gemini models have been in testing with Perplexity for a long time but have never reached a full release, so their inclusion would mark a major milestone.
On another note, Perplexity is working on a feature that allows users of spaces to filter search results by recency. Options like “all time,” “today,” “last week,” “last month,” and “last year” would enable users to narrow their searches to the latest news or expand them for broader research. This could significantly enhance the precision of search results when using spaces. When combined with the ability to restrict searches to specific domains, it could become a powerful tool for refined research. However, these features are still under development and have not yet been released.
In the meantime, a recent update to the iOS and Android apps introduced a dedicated tab for spaces, similar to the WebUI interface. This tab makes it much easier to access and manage spaces. Another helpful addition is the option to select the language in voice dictation mode, which improves usability for multilingual users.
Lastly, Perplexity offers new users a limited free month of pro usage. If you are locked out of the platform, you may see a banner providing an opportunity to claim this offer.
