NotebookLM integration is now being gradually introduced to Gemini web, allowing users to attach their notebooks directly within the Gemini menu and use them as a live data source for conversations. This capability is not yet available to everyone, with access currently confirmed on a limited number of accounts. The update supports multiple notebook attachments, making it possible to bring substantial datasets into Gemini and leverage them across both standard queries and within custom gems. This means that users can now build personalized GEMs specifically tailored to process and reference their own notebooks.

When a notebook is attached and referenced in a conversation, such as by requesting a summary, Gemini pulls information directly from the attached content, with in-line citations linking back to precise locations in the notebook. Clicking a citation takes the user directly to the corresponding notebook entry.

This reflects a broader strategic shift at Google, moving toward a more unified AI ecosystem in which various tools are tightly connected and information can flow seamlessly between them. Notably, the feature is rolling out to free accounts as well, suggesting that Google aims to broaden the reach and usefulness of Gemini’s integrations.

Google’s strategy here aligns with its current focus on expanding the practical utility of Gemini by connecting it to other productivity tools and content sources. By enabling NotebookLM integration and exposing this to both free and paid users, Google is positioning Gemini as a hub for knowledge work, with the long-term potential for more cross-product functionality as the ecosystem matures.
