OpenAI seems to be preparing several significant releases for ChatGPT. In addition to the previously announced O3-mini model, the potential release of the Operator—rumored last year—seems to be drawing closer. One intriguing feature that may tie into the Operator is called Tasks. Initially discovered during the “12 Days of OpenAI,” Tasks appears to be getting more updates. This feature allows users to schedule tasks, set execution times, run them, list them, and track their status.
OpenAI is reportedly working on a feature similar to Deep Research, introduced with Gemini last year. Codenamed Caterpillar, this feature is expected to integrate with Tasks, enabling ChatGPT to perform actions like:
- Searching for specific information
- Thinking through problems
- Summarizing data
- Opening websites
- Accessing documents
Upon completion of these tasks, notifications will alert users, and desktop notifications will also be an option for browser users. However, there will likely be a limit on the number of tasks that can run simultaneously, though specifics about this limit are not yet clear.
Custom instructions are also expected to receive minor updates, with options becoming more granular. Users might also see suggestions for styles to customize ChatGPT’s behavior in new ways, adding flexibility to how instructions are tailored.
Other recent updates focus on improving canvas rendering for Python, React, and HTML. React rendering, which had been faulty recently, now seems fixed. Furthermore, React rendering capabilities appear ready for release, functioning smoothly and reliably.
Improvements to the memory feature are another area of development. OpenAI may soon enable ChatGPT to use memory for search queries, personalizing search experiences further. Additionally, enhancements to the general memory system could allow ChatGPT to remember more about users, including their preferences and past interactions.
Many of these updates are highly likely to roll out as early as January, so there’s plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
