Le Chat users to gain access to AFP’s multilingual news archive in new partnership

Mistral AI, a Paris-based artificial intelligence company, has announced a multi-year partnership with Agence France-Presse (AFP), one of the world's leading news agencies. This collaboration integrates AFP's extensive text-based news content into Mistral's conversational AI assistant, Le Chat. The integration, set to roll out to all Le Chat users in the coming weeks, aims to enhance the chatbot’s ability to provide accurate, up-to-date, and multilingual responses.

Le Chat will now have access to AFP's daily production of approximately 2,300 news stories in six languages—French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Arabic—as well as AFP's archives dating back to 1983. This partnership excludes visual content like photos and videos, as Mistral focuses on large language models rather than image generation. The collaboration is expected to significantly improve the factual reliability of Le Chat’s responses by grounding them in professional journalism.

For Mistral AI, this marks its first major content partnership with a media organization. The move positions the company as a competitor to established players like OpenAI and Google in the generative AI space. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch highlighted that this partnership is particularly valuable for business clients who require verified and sourced information for tasks such as research and documentation. The integration also aligns with Mistral’s commitment to offering a multilingual and multicultural alternative in the AI market.

For AFP, this agreement represents a diversification of revenue streams beyond traditional media clients. AFP CEO Fabrice Fries noted that the collaboration aligns with the agency's strategy of leveraging verified and contextualized information in new technological applications. This partnership comes at a time when AFP has faced challenges like Meta discontinuing its third-party fact-checking program.

This deal reflects a broader trend in the AI industry where companies are partnering with trusted news organizations to address issues like misinformation and improve content credibility. Similar agreements have been seen with OpenAI and Google partnering with other major publishers.
