Google appears to be preparing a new feature called Guided Learning for its Gemini product, placing it within the Tool Selector menu alongside other functionalities. The target audience for this feature is likely students, lifelong learners, and those looking to structure their knowledge acquisition directly through Gemini. At this stage, initial testing did not surface any distinct changes in user output or interface, making its actual scope and function unclear. The placement in the Tool selector hints that Guided Learning could offer a more tailored, possibly stepwise or interactive, educational flow, potentially marking a shift toward Gemini as an education companion within Google’s workspace ecosystem.
At the same time, OpenAI has been surfacing a Study Together feature for some users in ChatGPT, although it’s not operational yet and currently doesn’t produce unique output compared to standard responses. However, analysis of references within the product’s code suggests that, when activated, Study Together may present users with a collaborative or guided study session, perhaps emphasizing real-time or structured learning. This overlap in timing between Google and OpenAI reflects a growing strategic emphasis on turning AI assistants into more active learning partners, which could fit into both companies’ ambitions to drive user retention among students and self-learners.

For both products, the main limitation right now is the lack of visible differentiation in experience, as neither Gemini Guided Learning nor ChatGPT Study Together have been fully rolled out or enabled for testing. No clear timeline for a public launch has been suggested by either company, but with similar features appearing nearly simultaneously, the race to define AI-powered learning tools seems well underway.
