WhatsApp Messenger beta for Android Community Report 📲 POCOPHONE F1

Hints about WhatsApp for Android getting dark mode have been all over the place the past year or so. Now that it's been some time, enabling the long-awaited dark theme option is finally doable, though with a catch. For starters, having root access is mandatory.

Without further ado, here are the basic steps.

  1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /data/data/com.whatsapp/shared_prefs/.
  2. Open com.whatsapp_preferences.xml.
  3. Scroll to the end of the .xml text file and add the following line: <boolean name="dark_mode" value="true" />
  4. Save and exit.
  5. Force stop WhatsApp.
  6. Reopen the app, go to the settings and enable dark mode.
  7. Enjoy.

Recommended file managers are MiXplorer, MiXplorer Silver and Solid Explorer. Also, having the latest version of WhatsApp (2.19.358 at the time of writing) is a must.

From my brief testing, it appears so that the feature is nearly ready and I'm confident that they will roll it out fairly soon.
