[India ONLY] MX Player Beta Standalone Report

    Devices
    Huawei P8, Android 6.0

Recently, MX Player was acquired by the Indian media giant Times Internet Limited (part of Times Group) for $140 million. The reason behind this act is that MX Player is one of India's most popular video player apps, boasting a total of 500 million downloads - 350 million of which come from India. Also, there are 175 million active users from the country.

Times Internet Limited's plan is to make the app become an online video player, similar to YouTube and Netflix. It's going to feature English and regional content, plus personalized recommendations to Indian users.

The app is going to have a large library of original content from a variety of genres, including romance, thrillers, drama and non-fiction shows such as realities and game shows, as well as content in Indian regional languages. Future plans are creating about 40 original shows, streaming live TV channels and movies too.

All of these will be monetized through a freemium model in an attempt to grab as much market share as possible from similar services like Netflix, Hotstar and Amazon Prime.

Interestingly, it will also feature content from independent content creators. The company intends to open the doors for independent creators, and this content acquisition will be on a revenue-sharing basis that will also feature bonuses for performance. This sounds a lot like what YouTube does, or at least attempts to do so.

The planned user base includes the younger generation of Indians between the age of 18 to 35 and the app is going to be optimized for the bad internet connection speeds there. It's also going to have downloading and sharing options.

The new MX Player has a very high goal and tries to move from being a local player only to a video streaming platform, aiming to compete with the likes of YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar. As of now, everything is a work-in-progress, so you should keep your expectations low.

You can get the beta from TestingCatalog, but keep in mind that it's currently only available in India.
