Meta is taking direct aim at bulky headsets with Meta VR Glasses, a roughly 100-gram device built to serve as a cinema, courtside seat, workspace, game system, and hologram calling tool. The open-sided glasses are five times lighter than Quest 3 and keep the wearer’s surroundings visible through a passthrough camera. Compute, battery, and storage sit in a separate puck that clips to a pocket or bag and connects through an optical tether.

A 5K Infinite Display pairs micro-OLED panels at 37 pixels per degree with custom pancake lenses. Dolby Vision handles video, while Dolby Atmos speakers sit inside the frames. Meta AI is part of the operating system, and voice, gaze and hand gestures replace dedicated controllers. The puck runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor. Meta says its battery lasts up to three hours for high-resolution media playback and supports 45W fast charging.

Meta says this is the first VR device to receive IMAX certification. Disney+ subscribers in select countries will be able to stream 3D films such as The Avengers and Black Panther from November, including inside themed spaces based on Tatooine and Avengers Tower. Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM will also offer special VR versions of Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope. Meta lists Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex, ESPN, Tubi, Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ among its media partners, with thousands of titles planned internationally by launch, including 3D movies from Lionsgate. James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision are preparing blockbusters for their first release in 3D in 2027.

Sports are another major part of the pitch. Meta and ESPN are developing Immersive Sports around 8K streams and 180-degree views, beginning with college football this year on Meta Quest and expanding to more sports in 2027\. Meta ultimately expects more than 100 immersive live events per year, with MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC among the partners.

For work, wearers can create one or more private screens and turn a flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad while full-color passthrough maintains a view of the room. More than 75 games will support gesture-only play at launch, while Xbox Cloud Gaming will add hundreds more. Hologram calls will render a photorealistic version of the wearer with live expressions and reactions. Other glasses users will hear spatial audio, while participants on phones or computers will see the hologram on a conventional screen. Meta says WhatsApp and Zoom will support the calling system.

Meta plans to sell Meta VR Glasses in spring 2027 for $1,299.99 USD. The announcement does not provide a complete country-by-country launch list.
