Google Play Points program got released to more users and this is how to test them

· 3 min read

Google Play points feature was presented back in November 2019 as a rewards program for Google Play. It was released in the USA last year and now this program is gradually rolling out in some European countries. This means that it won't be available to everyone until the rollout is complete and on 13 of October there was another rollout wave.

What are Google Play Points for?

Google Play Points allows you to earn them while you are performing some actions on Google Play like "Install a certain app" or when you buy apps or games or in-game items. These points can be spent right over there for Google Play credits, discounts or in-app purchases in the top games. This feature looks very similar to Apps that allow you to earn rewards for installing other apps and games but this time it is natively integrated into Google Play.

In the beginning, you earn 1 point for every 1$ that you spend. As you earn more points, your level will grow from Bronze to Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each level has its own benefits that will impact you Play Points earnings.

Bronze:

  • 1 point for every $1 spent
  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 2x points on movie rentals & books during monthly events

Silver (150+ pts/year):

  • 1.1 points for every $1 spent
  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 3x points on movie rentals and books during monthly events
  • Weekly Silver level prizes up to 3 points every week

Gold (600+ pts/year):

  • 1.2 points for every $1 spent
  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 4x points on movie rentals and books during monthly events
  • Weekly Gold level prizes up to 5 points every week

Platinum (3,000 pts/year):

  • 1.4 points for every $1 spent
  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 5x points on movie rentals and books during monthly events
  • Weekly Platinum level prizes up to 10 points every week
  • Premium support with faster responses and dedicated agents

This feature will appear together with a pop-up window and several banners on the home page of Google Play app. Google Play Points section will also appear in the app drawer menu where you will also see how many points do you have in general.

Play Points view has three simple tabs for "Earn", "Use" and "Perks". On the perks tab, you can see all the benefits of the levels described above. "Earn" an "Use" tabs have a list of different options that will navigate you to the respective app or game where you can earn and spend your points.

Where Play Points are available and how to get them?

Currently, these are the main requirements for you to have a chance to get covered by the rollout wave.

  • Gradual rollout was confirmed for Germany, USA, France, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and the UK.
  • You need to activate a valid payment method in the Play Store.

In case if the feature is rolled out to your device, you need to explicitly opt-in by pressing on the "Join" button in the Play Points view.

Post updated: It turns out that some installation offers to earn Play Points have an expiration day. It also may be worth checking Google Play on the web because there you may found additional offers that are not visible on the mobile app. And yes, there is no penalty if you will remove the installed app from your device immediately.
