# DevDay: New Plans and new platform for building AI apps

OpenAI appears to be preparing a new onboarding flow for its API platform, where developers will choose from three plans: Free, Prototype, and Accelerate.

The Free tier targets developers experimenting with API ideas, offering free API access through Codex and limited access to Playgrounds. Prototype is positioned for building lightweight prototypes and small apps, with access to all models, higher usage, and broader access to Codex and Playgrounds. Accelerate targets production apps, starts at $50, includes all models, and offers higher usage and rate limits.

What stands out is how OpenAI describes the platform around a progression from experimenting to prototyping and launching production apps. The wording suggests OpenAI wants Platform to become a broader development environment rather than primarily an API dashboard. It remains unclear whether developers will eventually be able to deploy or host complete applications directly there.

That direction would fit OpenAI’s recent product strategy. On September 10, OpenAI introduced the Agents API, which lets developers run cloud agents using an OpenAI-managed Codex harness and OpenAI-hosted sandboxes. This already gives OpenAI more control over the runtime layer behind developer applications.

Sam Altman recently shared: "And then we want you all to come up with great ideas and build them and to get to be happy users. The best ideas will come from you all.", which correlates very well with this assumption.

No rollout date for the new onboarding plans is visible yet. OpenAI DevDay takes place on September 29 in San Francisco, with the company promising technical sessions around APIs and developer tools, making it a possible venue for further Platform changes.

For now, however, the discovered strings confirm the new plan structure, not an OpenAI-hosted app deployment product.
