Canva has launched Craft, its first image-generation foundation model, built and trained from scratch by Canva Research. It is available now to all Canva users worldwide through Dream Lab and to developers through Canva’s public API. Craft produces images up to 2K resolution using more than 30 preset aspect ratios or a custom one. Prompts can be written in any language, and it supports generated text in 55 languages.

Canva says Craft debuted as the fourth-ranked image model on DesignArena, making Canva Research the platform’s second-ranked image-generation lab. Its outputs rank first for People & Portraits among 87 models and Landscapes & Nature among 85, second for Abstract & Patterns, and fourth for Products. The model is built for work spanning realistic scenes, typography-rich layouts, illustrations, portraits, and conceptual imagery.

Craft separates composition planning from image rendering. The planning model maps the requested elements, spatial relationships, scale, visual hierarchy, and text before a dedicated renderer creates the image. Canva says this structure supports legible text, precise placement, and targeted changes without rebuilding the entire composition. JSON boundary boxing also helps Magic Layers convert generated images into editable elements. Advanced editing and reference-image capabilities are planned for future releases.

Training emphasized design rather than focusing mainly on photography, drawing on millions of human-made Canva templates such as posters, presentations, infographics, menus, and social posts. Canva followed pre-training with supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning informed by its professional designers. Designers and dozens of researchers assessed more than 25,000 image pairs against leading models, prioritizing designer judgment when it differed from automated evaluations.

Canva says serving more than a quarter of a billion people who create over 400 designs each second required work on inference cost and speed. Model distillation cut the number of inference steps to a fraction of the original, while a custom inference engine was optimized for the planning stage. Canva says Craft itself is now an order of magnitude faster than its first internal version. Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast are upcoming variants intended to deliver high-quality generation at a fraction of the cost of leading frontier models.

Users can open Dream Lab from Canva’s bottom-left panel, while product teams can use the public API to add Craft to their own tools. Canva MCP support is coming soon, allowing AI assistants and automated workflows to create design-ready images within larger tasks. Craft is backed by Canva Shield, including input and output moderation, privacy and safety controls, continuous testing and reporting tools. Canva also plans further work on quality, detail and control, including fine print and technical drawings.
